Brookhaven Alcoholics Anonymous Meetings and NA Meetings

  • Alcoholics Anonymous (often known as AA) is perhaps the most well-known program connected to defeating an addiction or chemical dependency. For decades, AA meetings have helped countless individuals overcome their dependence upon alcohol and start (or continue) their pursuit of lifetime recovery.
  • Narcotics Anonymous (NA) – There is not a focus on one specific drug. Instead, the purpose of NA is to discuss the pains and triumphs that accompany addiction and recovery.

NA is a 12 step plan very similar to Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and it shares many of the same principles, practices, and philosophies. The goal of NA is to cultivate a community where addicts help one another on the path to recovery. Sessions are comprised of men and women of every demographic and at various levels of recovery, from many years to just a couple days of being clean.

    Dual Diagnosis and Addiction

Many individuals suffering from a substance use disorder (SUD) also suffer from a co-occurring cognitive health or behavioral health. This is known as a dual diagnosis. Individuals with a dual diagnosis need an integrated recovery plan that deals with the two disorders as interconnected mental health issues.

Prevalent mental health disorders associated with drug abuse include the list below:

    • ADHD – Many individuals are given adderall to treat their ADHD, which can be habit-forming and create a dangerous habit of substance abuse.
Depression – Many individuals identified as having depression attempt to self-medicate with drugs or alcohol. This oftentimes makes the condition worse. The crash after the high can be terrible for those with a pre-existing depressive issue.
    • Bipolar Disorder – Approximately one-half of people with bipolar disorder also battle with addiction. Just like any other mental health disorder, it can be tempting to self-medicate. Drugs and alcohol provide a source of temporary relief from mental challenges and manic instances for people with bipolar.
    • PTSD – When a person develops post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) their brain produces fewer endorphins than a normal brain, making them more likely to turn to alcohol or drugs to be happy.
    • Borderline Personality Disorder – Reports have shown that drug addiction and borderline personality disorder
    • (BPD) commonly manifest together. Over two-thirds of individuals with BPD have turned toward substance abuse at some point in their lives.
    • OCD – Persons with OCD routinely suffer from anxiety and depression caused by their compulsory tendencies, which can result in substance abuse.
    • Eating Disorder – Eating disorders often derive from intense perceptions of inferiority. Drugs that eliminate desire for food are especially prevalent among people with these disorders.
    • Generalized Anxiety Disorder – The most typical mental ailment in the USA, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) impairs eighteen percent of all adults. People who live with GAD might be more likely to turn to drugs or alcohol to handle their symptoms. People may also abuse benzodiazepines, which are highly addictive pharmaceutical drugs prescribed to manage anxiety disorders.
    • Schizophrenia – Schizophrenia is identified by hallucinations and delusional thinking. Diagnosing schizophrenia parallel to an addiction can be tricky because both conditions create the same behavior.

    Addiction and Psychological Dependence

Most professionals or materials that refer to psychological dependence are referring to the cognitive and emotional aspects of addictive actions or the withdrawal period from narcotics or alcohol as opposed to trying to classify certain substances or activities as being mentally addictive or physically addictive. The symptoms associated with the psychological components of addictive behaviors or with psychological addiction are typically listed as:

    • Cravings
    • Complications with stress and anxiety that occur when someone attempts to quit their addictive conduct
    • Problems with depression when one is not using their drug of choice or attempts to end their addictive behavior
    • Irritability and trouble sleeping that occur when an individual is not using their preferred drug or attempting to kick the habit
    • Any other problems with mood swings that manifest when one is not using their preferred drug or attempting to stop
    • Decreased appetite or increased appetite associated with not using the preferred drug
