For decades, AA meetings have helped countless men and women overcome their addiction to alcohol and begin (or continue) their pursuit of permanent recovery.
  • Narcotics Anonymous (NA) – There is not a focus on any certain drug. Instead, the goal of NA is to share the hard times and victories that follow drug addiction and recovery.

NA is a 12 step plan very close to Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and it provides many of the same foundations, practices, and ideologies. The mission of NA is to create a community where addicts help each other on the road to rehabilitation. Sessions consist of people of virtually every demographic and at varying degrees of recovery, from several years to just a few days of being clean.

What is the Dual Diagnosis and Addiction?

Many individuals suffering from a substance use disorder (SUD) also endure a co-occurring mental health or behavioral disorder. This is known as a dual diagnosis. Users with a dual diagnosis require an integrated treatment program that focuses on both ailments as interconnected mental health issues.

Common mental health disorders connected to drug and alcohol abuse include the disorders below:

    • ADHD – Many people are prescribed adderall to treat their ADHD, which can be addictive and generate a harmful pattern of drug abuse.
Depression – Numerous individuals diagnosed with depression try to self-medicate with illegal drugs or alcohol. This in many cases makes the disorder even worse. The come-down after the high can be terrible for those with a pre-existing depressive issue.
    • Bipolar Disorder – Nearly one-half of people diagnosed with bipolar disorder also struggle with addiction. As with any other disorder, it can be attractive to self-medicate. Alcohol and drugs offer a source of temporary relief from emotional situations and manic instances for people with bipolar.
    • PTSD – When an individual develops post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) their brain creates fewer endorphins than a normal brain, making them more likely to turn toward alcohol or drugs to feel happy.
    • Borderline Personality Disorder – Reports have suggested that drug addiction and borderline personality disorder
    • (BPD) commonly appear together. Over two-thirds of those with BPD have turned toward substance abuse at some time in their lives.
    • OCD – People with OCD often deal with anxiety and depression because of their compulsory tendencies, which can turn them to drug abuse.
    • Eating Disorder – Eating disorders often stem from strong feelings of inferiority. Stimulants that decrease desire for food are especially common among individuals struggling with these disorders.
    • Generalized Anxiety Disorder – The most typical mental condition in the U.S., generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) impairs 18 percent of adults. Individuals who deal with GAD may be more likely to abuse drugs and alcohol to handle their symptoms. Individuals may also use benzodiazepines, which are extremely addictive pharmaceutical drugs used to manage anxiety problems.
    • Schizophrenia – Schizophrenia is characterized by hallucinations and delusional thinking. Identifying schizophrenia side by side an addiction can be complicated because both disorders create the same behavior.

    What Is Psychological Dependence?

Most professionals or references that refer to mental addiction are referring to the cognitive and emotional elements of addictive behaviors or the withdrawal process from drugs or alcohol rather than attempting to group certain drugs or activities as being mentally addictive or physically addictive. The signs associated with the psychological aspects of addictive behaviors or with psychological addiction are commonly described as:

    • Strong drug cravings
    • Troubles with anxiety that develop when someone makes an attempt to quit their addictive actions
    • Issues with depression when an individual is not using their substance of choice or tries to shut down their addictive behavior
    • Frustration and uneasiness that happen when someone is not using their preferred drug or attempting to kick the habit
    • Any other problems with mood fluctuations that happen when one is not using their substance of choice or attempting to quit
