Pelham Alcoholics Anonymous Meetings and NA Meetings

  • Alcoholics Anonymous (often known as AA) is perhaps the most widely known program related to defeating an addiction or chemical dependency. For many years, AA meetings have supported countless women and men overcome their dependence upon alcohol and start (or continue) their quest of permanent recovery.
  • Narcotics Anonymous (NA) – There is not a focus on any specific drug. Rather, the goal of NA is to share the hard times and victories that come with addiction and recovery.

NA is a 12 step program very similar to Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and it shares many of the same foundations, tactics, and philosophies. The objective of NA is to create a community where addicts assist each other on the path to healing. Sessions are comprised of people of many different demographic and at various levels of recovery, from several years to just a couple days of being sober.

What is the Dual Diagnosis and Addiction?

Lots of people diagnosed with a substance use disorder (SUD) also live with a co-occurring cognitive health or behavioral health. This is known as a dual diagnosis. Patients with a dual diagnosis require an integrated recovery plan that deals with both ailments as interconnected mental health issues.

Prevalent mental health disorders linked to drug abuse consist of the list below:

    • ADHD – Many people are prescribed adderall to treat their ADHD, which may be addictive and result in a dangerous habit of substance abuse.
Depression – Numerous people identified as having depression try to self-medicate with illegal drugs or alcohol. This often times makes the problem even worse. The crash after the high can be terrible for those with a pre-existing depressive condition.
    • Bipolar Disorder – Roughly one-half of people with bipolar disorder also struggle with addiction. As with any other disorder, it can be appealing to self-medicate. Alcohol and drugs provide a moment of temporary relief from emotional situations and manic episodes for people with bipolar.
    • PTSD – When someone develops post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) their brain produces fewer endorphins than a normal brain, making them more likely to turn toward alcohol or drugs to be happy.
    • Borderline Personality Disorder – Reports have revealed that drug addiction and borderline personality disorder
    • (BPD) commonly are present together. More than two-thirds of those with BPD have turned toward drug abuse at some point in their lives.
    • OCD – People with OCD oftentimes experience anxiety and depression caused by their uncontrolled behavior, which can turn them to drug abuse.
    • Eating Disorder – Eating disorders often stem from intense thoughts of inferiority. Drugs that decrease food cravings are especially prevalent among people with these disorders.
    • Generalized Anxiety Disorder – The most prevalent mental ailment in the USA, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) impacts eighteen percent of adults. People who struggle with GAD might be more likely to turn to drugs or alcohol to deal with their symptoms. People may also abuse benzodiazepines, which are very addictive prescription pills prescribed to treat anxiety problems.
    • Schizophrenia – Schizophrenia is identified by hallucinations and delusional thoughts. Identifying schizophrenia together with an addiction can be tricky because both problems share the same effects.

    What Is Psychological Dependence?

Most professionals or references that talk about psychological dependence are talking about the cognitive and emotional facets of addictive habits or the withdrawal period from narcotics or alcohol as opposed to trying to categorize particular drugs or activities as being mentally addictive or physically addictive. The conditions associated with the psychological aspects of addictive behaviors or with psychological dependence are typically classified as:

    • Cravings
    • Challenges with stress and anxiety that occur when someone makes an attempt to stop their addictive conduct
    • Concerns with depression when one is not using their drug of choice or makes an effort to shut down their addictive behavior
    • Irritability and restlessness that occur when a person is not using their favorite drug or trying to kick the habit
    • Any other problems with mood fluctuations that happen when one is not using their preferred drug or attempting to quit
    • Decreased appetite or increased appetite connected with not using the favorite drug
