AA Meetings and NA Meetings in Southampton

  • Alcoholics Anonymous (often known as AA) is arguably the most well-known treatment connected to overcoming an addiction or chemical dependency. For many years, AA meetings have supported countless individuals triumph over their dependence upon alcohol and begin (or continue) their quest of permanent recovery.
  • Narcotics Anonymous (NA) – There is not a focus on any particular substance. Instead, the purpose of NA is to discuss the hard times and victories that accompany addiction and recovery.

NA is a twelve-step plan very similar to Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and it provides many of the same fundamentals, tactics, and philosophies. The goal of NA is to build an environment where addicts support each other on the road to rehabilitation. Meetings include individuals of virtually every demographic and at varying degrees of recovery, from decades to just a couple days of being sober.

    Dual Diagnosis and Addiction

Many people suffering from a substance use disorder (SUD) also endure a co-occurring cognitive health or behavioral disorder. This is referred to as a dual diagnosis. Users with a dual diagnosis require an integrated treatment program that attends to both ailments as linked mental health issues.

Common mental health disorders identified with drug and alcohol abuse consist of the list below:

    • ADHD – Many individuals are given stimulants to address their ADHD, which may be addictive and create a dangerous pattern of substance abuse.
Depression – Some individuals suffering from depression attempt to self-medicate with drugs or alcohol. This frequently makes the mental state worse. The plunge after the high can be terrible for those with a pre-existing depressive problem.
    • Bipolar Disorder – Nearly half of people diagnosed with bipolar disorder also deal with addiction. As with any other disorder, it can be attractive to self-medicate. Alcohol and drugs provide a source of short-lived relief from emotional situations and manic incidents for individuals with bipolar.
    • PTSD – When a person develops post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) their brain generates less endorphins than a healthy brain, making them more likely to seek the help of alcohol or drugs to be happy.
    • Borderline Personality Disorder – Reports have revealed that dependency and borderline personality disorder
    • (BPD) often transpire together. Over two-thirds of people with BPD have turned toward drug abuse at some point in their lives.
    • OCD – People with OCD commonly suffer from anxiety and depression because of their involuntary actions, which can turn them to drugs or alcohol.
    • Eating Disorder – Eating disorders often derive from powerful perceptions of inferiority. Medications that suppress food cravings are especially prevalent among people dealing with these disorders.
    • Generalized Anxiety Disorder – The most typical mental ailment in the USA, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) affects 18 percent of adults. People who experience GAD may be more likely to abuse drugs and alcohol to manage their issues. Individuals may also use benzodiazepines, which are very addictive pharmaceutical medications prescribed to address anxiety disorders.
    • Schizophrenia – Schizophrenia is characterized by hallucinations and delusional thoughts. Identifying schizophrenia in addition to an addiction can be tricky because both issues share the same effects.

    Addiction and Psychological Dependence

Most people or references that refer to mental addiction are referring to the cognitive and emotional elements of addictive actions or the withdrawal period from substances or alcohol rather than attempting to classify specific substances or activities as being mentally addictive or physically addictive. The signs associated with the psychological elements of addictive behaviors or with psychological dependence are commonly classified as:

    • Uncontrolled desire for the drug
    • Troubles with stress and anxiety that develop when someone makes an attempt to eliminate their addictive conduct
    • Concerns with depression when an individual is not using their substance of choice or attempts to cease their addictive behavior
    • Irritability and uneasiness that materialize when a person is not using their preferred drug or trying to quit
    • Any other problems with mood fluctuations that develop when one is not using their substance of choice or attempting to stop
    • Appetite loss or increased appetite associated with not using the substance of choice
