What is the Dual Diagnosis and Addiction?

Many people diagnosed with a substance use disorder (SUD) also suffer from a co-occurring cognitive health or behavioral disorder. This is referred to as a dual diagnosis. Patients with a dual diagnosis need an integrated treatment program that attends to the two disorders as linked mental health issues.

Prevalent mental health disorders identified with drug abuse consist of the list below:

    • ADHD – Many people are prescribed stimulants to address their ADHD, which may be habit-forming and generate a dangerous habit of substance abuse.
Depression – Some individuals identified as having depression try to self-medicate with drugs or alcohol. This often times makes the condition even worse. The plunge after the high can be devastating for those with a pre-existing depressive issue.
    • Bipolar Disorder – Approximately fifty percent of people with bipolar disorder also deal with addiction. Just like any other mental health disorder, it can be appealing to self-medicate. Alcohol and drugs provide a source of temporary relief from emotional situations and manic incidents for people with bipolar.
    • PTSD – When someone develops post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) their brain creates less endorphins than a healthy brain, making them more likely to seek the help of alcohol or drugs to feel happy.
    • Borderline Personality Disorder – Studies have suggested that dependency and borderline personality disorder
    • (BPD) commonly are present together. More than two-thirds of those with BPD have turned toward substance abuse at some point in their lives.
    • OCD – Persons with OCD commonly experience anxiety and depression because of their compulsory tendencies, which can lead to substance abuse.
    • Eating Disorder – Eating disorders often originate from powerful perceptions of inferiority. Stimulants that suppress food cravings are especially prevalent among people with these disorders.
    • Generalized Anxiety Disorder – The most common mental affliction in the U.S., generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) impairs eighteen percent of adults. Persons who live with GAD might be more likely to abuse drugs and alcohol to manage their symptoms. Individuals may also abuse benzodiazepines, which are highly addictive pharmaceutical pills prescribed to manage anxiety disorders.
    • Schizophrenia – Schizophrenia is characterized by hallucinations and delusional thoughts. Identifying schizophrenia parallel to an addiction can be complicated because both disorders create similar behavior.

    Drug and Psychological Dependence

Most people or references that refer to mental dependence are referring to the cognitive and emotional components of addictive behaviors or the withdrawal period from narcotics or alcohol in contrast to attempting to classify particular drugs or activities as being psychologically addictive or physically addictive. The symptoms associated with the psychological elements of addictive behaviors or with psychological dependence are usually classified as:

    • Uncontrolled desire for the substance

    West Seneca, New York

West Seneca is a town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 44,711 at the 2010 census.[4] West Seneca is a centrally located interior town of the county, and a suburb of Buffalo. West Seneca, Orchard Park and Hamburg form the inner "Southtowns", a cluster of middle-class suburban towns.

In 1851, the town of Seneca was formed from parts of the towns of Cheektowaga and Hamburg. The town changed the name to "West Seneca" in 1852 to avoid confusion with the town of Seneca in Ontario County, New York. In 1909 the area immediately south of Buffalo split from West Seneca, becoming the city of Lackawanna.[5]
